Star All-Stars Fall Over the Line 31 October

Match one for the Star All-Stars (C Grade) was an entertaining affair.

The skipper knew that he could count on the senior players to set the tone early - and he was not disappointed, with Kerry, Stu and Daryl showing up right on time, at the wrong ground.

We lost the toss and they elected to bat, and at game time players were still drifting in - we started with eight and built up to ten within the first three overs.

Stu and Kerry (FormerPremierBowlingTrophyWinner) opened the attack, and took a while to dial in the radar, we had to stop regularly to sweep rust off the crease.

With the exception of one batsman, Eastlink never really got going. They were tied down by accurate bowling and tidy fielding. Kerry, Stu and Yap all picked up a a couple of wickets, and Peter squeezed out three at the end with some hooping inswingers.

Eastlink were bowled out for 130, including 20 wides (which will need to be sorted out!)

In reply, we lost James early, but Francois got things moving. At the other end, Brendan looked all-class.

But the top order didn't last long, with everybody getting a start but not moving on.

We were on 70 odd with 7 wickets down at drinks.

Stu and Kerry stopped the bleeding and carried us through to 106 with 12 overs to go before Stu holed out after a great little knock.

With 24 to win and 12 overs remaining the scene was well set for a trademark captains knock from the self proclaimed "knot-at-the-end-of the-rope". But the skipper played inside one and had the castle disturbed, leaving Kerry and Daniel - (who had already given himself up as a bunny) to see us home.

It was scary stuff, with Kerry bringing out the reverse pull and Dan hitting one straight to gully with 6 needed, only to see him shell it. But they held it together long enough to get us across the line.

The other performance that really stood out on the day was from young James O'Brien who dropped his first attempted catch for the club (but got the run out), was out caught in the first over, and then ran out Brendan (while running for him) when he was looking well set. Next week is a garunteed PB Jimmy-O.

31 October A's vs Marist

Another fantastic day for cricket today. We lost the toss and they elected to bat, we would have bowled anyway so no big loss. Dave and Mark opened up with the ultimatum that they couldn't bowl any more than 3 wides each... that didn't last long as both bowlers filled that quota within their first two overs. All the bowlers bowled well but 26 wides is still far too many. Obviously a bit of work still needed at practise.

Marist started slowly and lost regular wickets so struggled to get any momentum. We ended up bowling them out for 155 with around 10 overs to go. The wickets were shared around with every bowler used picking up 1 or 2. Well done to Jess who beat the bat on numerous occassions and should have picked up more than his 2 wickets.

Toby and Ryan opened the batting and looked good until Toby was out for 6. Myself and Ryan then had a good partnership with Ryan out for a well made 32. Aaron then joined me and looked very shaky to say the least in the first few overs, but after a few glorious cut shots, looked a million bucks. I was out for 27, Josh got a first ball duck (again), and Phil must have made an enemy of the umpire because he was adjudged run out when he was well in. At that stage we were looking a bit shaky but some cool heads from Aaron who scored his first every half century with 54* and J B who played a fantastic supporting role making 14* saw us home with 12 overs to spare.

Close but no Cigar

The prem's went down in a close battle with Tech in the weekend. We made 223/9 off fifty overs in an unusual Star innings. Zeb and Biggles got the team off to a good start, with Aidan blasting a quick 30. Braces carried on the trend with a quick 20 and we were well placed at 102/3 after 25 overs. Two quick wickets stright after drinks put the brakes on things and it was a struggle to rebuild losing wickets at regular intervals for the remainder of the innings. Only a superbly timed 79 not out from Damo got us through to the competitive total, hitting 35 of these runs off his last 8 balls, including 4 sixes in the final over.
Tech were in trouble at 2/10 with Garry taking wickets in consecutive balls, but a number of missed run outs cost us as after the third wicket fell Adam Blake (101 n.o) and Nathan Daley (60) put on about 140 for the fourth wicket, effectively sealing the game, though not without the usual drama when with three overs to go being told by Pete Reeve that 10 runs were needed off 18 balls, only for them to start clapping after 7 were scored, and 7 balls left. Apparently they got the scores wrong when they called it out....

Results

Prems and As started their limited overs comp last weekend.

The As chased down 174 and you can read Stirlos short story about it on the blog. The Prems lost narrowly, but Daimo got his name in the paper for taking 28 off the last over. He was stoked, to put it mildly.

I'm sure that Mark C will have an account of the prems match on the blog any day now.

C Team

This weekend the third team kicks it into gear. The self proclaimed Star All-Stars is playing in the C Grade competition and will feature some new faces and some really, really old faces.

October 24th A's lowdown

Well the morning started out fantastically with the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky. We had a good team on paper for the game and were confident of playing well and winning against Suburbs at Discovery Park. We won the toss and elected to field first for no other reason than there was a bit of dew on the outfield so the ball wouldn't travel as far.

Jespreet decided to turn up 15 minutes late for the game which didn't help as he was due to open the bowling... We had to make do with 10 while Chuck smashed 3 quick boundaries and I thought we were in for a long day! Fortunately though Mark had enough of being smashed all over the park so clean bowled him in his next over. A good catch from Ryan had them 2 down but they batted well to get to their 50 inside 12 overs and continued on from there. We caught a lucky break when their best batsman was given out LBW after an inside edge, and some good bowling from Reg, Toby, Aaron and Rowly had them bowled out for 174 with around 7 overs to spare. Wickets: Mark 1, Rowly 3, Reg 2, Toby 1 and Aaron 2... I'm missing one but I don't have the scorebook with me.

Our fielding still needs a bit of work as a few chances went down, but overall it was a good performance in the field and 175 was definitely gettable on an artificial pitch.

Rowly and Ryan opened the batting and got to around 20 before Rowly skied one to the covers. I strolled in and put on a few with Ryan before he got out for 22 and Toby joined me. After 17 overs we were 52 for 2 so well on track. After drinks I had a bit of a brain meltdown and followed Rowly with a skier to covers. Toby continued on his way and was joined by Tim after Officer Dicey decided he was out before anyone else knew what was going on. An honest cop, what are the chances... Tim and Toby batted superbly in the middle overs, they started slowly but worked into it and took us to the last 10 overs needing 55 runs. A few fingernails started to be bitten as we lost 4 quick wickets. Reg rocked on up and tried to hit his first over into next Thursday but failed to connect with a single one... after a few quiet words he knuckled down and along with Aaron (Brutus the barber beefcake) Barbour, took us from needing around 40 runs from 30 balls to needing 19 off the last 2 overs. They batted fantastically and Reg hit the winning boundary with 3 balls to spare.

So overall a great team performance against a good Suburbs outfit. Probably a bit closer than it needed to be, but a win is a win.

Team Makeup This Season

All,

With the 20/20 finished and the season proper about to kick off we will have all three teams in operation. We wanted to let you know how we’ve structured the teams this year.

We will, as usual have a Premier and Senior A side, playing 50 over and 2-day cricket.

The premier competition is of course highly competitive, with a decent dose of Star Varsity humour thrown in.

The Senior A competition is fairly competitive, but there is more of a focus on development (and some fun.)

This year, we have chosen to enter our third team in the Senior C competition.

This competition plays limited overs cricket only, starting at 1pm in the afternoon.

The Cs competition is only as competitive as we want it to be – the focus is on getting out and having a crack, enjoying some cricket and improving as we go. The club board is putting a lot of time and effort into ensuring that this team has a ball this season!

We think having a Cs side provides better options for our players, and will hopefully appeal to semi-retired individuals that can’t commit to a 10:30am start. (You know who you are and I am waiting for your call.)

If you have any questions please let us know. Past players - if you are interested in getting involved with the third team – now is the time to get in touch.

Cheers

Our New Nets Will Look Roughly Like This

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

What d' ya reckon.

Senior B

10 one day games (45 overs) and 5 two day games (96 overs a day) all starting at 10.30 am

Mostly grass wickets.

Slightly higher standard.

Senior C

18 games of 35 overs starting at 1pm.

Still a reasonable standard.

Some B grade sides that preferred this format.

Some grass wickets, some artificial.
